Halloween Treat Recipe: Pumpkin Pie Dog Biscuits

Halloween is quickly approaching, which means soon dozens, if not hundreds of kids will arrive at your door for a delicious treat.  Be honest, you plan to treat yourself as well and dip into that candy bowl. And why not! It’s Halloween after all, and candy is awesome. You know who loves a treat just as much as you? Your pup! Don’t forget your best buddy this Halloween – treat them to a special Halloween themed treat this year using the excellent recipe we found below, courtesy of Dog Treat Kitchen. This recipe combines super healthy ingredients, like fibre-rich pumpkin, whole-wheat flour and rolled oats. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 2 tbsp. canola oil
  • ½ cup pure pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • ¼ cup natural, smooth peanut butter
  • ¼ cup water

Additional flour for rolling

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 F
  2. Mix dry ingredients in stand mixer bowl
  3. In another bowl, mix wet ingredients
  4. Make a well in dry ingredients in stand mixer bowl and pour in the pumpkin mixture
  5. Start mixing on low speed
  6. Add water and mix at low/medium speed until dough is no longer sticky
  7. Place the dough onto a floured surface, and hand knead the dough
  8. Roll out to ¼ inch thickness and cut into festive shapes
  9. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes
  10. Turn oven off and leave cookies in for an additional 30 minutes
  11. Cool on a wire rack before serving

Yield: Approximately 100 cookies using a 1-inch cookie cutter

Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks, store up to four weeks in the fridge and up to 6 months in the freezer
